FROM UNDER MOUNTAINS: MARIAN CHURCHLAND, CLAIRE GIBSON AND SLOAN LEONG SUBVERT CLICHÉS WITH A NEW FANTASY ADVENTURE
By Juliet Kahn
There will be magic in From Under Mountains, an ongoing fantasy series coming from Image in 2015 and announced at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Set in the world of Akhara, the story introduces us to a lord’s daughter, a disgraced knight, and a runaway thief whose unlikely partnership will change the course of a world locked in a bitter conflict between rival clans. There will be goblins and witches and knights as well, lost in the churning of a world in turmoil. Great houses will square off for power. Thieves will dash into the shadows. Naïve youths will learn that the world is vaster and more terrible than they ever imagined. In these warm, well-worn ways, it will embrace the best that fantasy, as a genre has to offer: sweeping scope grounded in the lives of heroes, villains, and everything in between.

Creators Marian Churchland, Claire Gibson, and Sloane Leong have worked on everything from Elephantmen to magical girl comics about anthropomorphic wolves, and they are bringing their varied experience to bear upon From Under Mountains and the fantasy genre in ways both familiar and innovative. ComicsAlliance talked with them to discuss breaking new ground with thoughtfulness, experience, and memories of Ursula Le Guin.

Can I get a brief explanation of 8House?
by Anonymous

royalboiler:

Sure.

8house is a series of stories all set in the same world or universe ruled by 8 magic houses. The idea is to make a shared space where different creators can play off each other’s ideas

The first series is going to be a series of mini series starting with:

8house Arclight (#1 to #4) written by me and drawn by Marian Churchland. about a women whose mind is trapped in the body of a monster that she projected herself into years ago.

8house Kiem (#5 to 8) by me and Xurxo Penalta is about a soldier who is asked to fake her death in order to transport a mysterious box to an enemy house.

in issue #9 (to 12)  Emma Rios and Hwei Lim take over with 8house Mirror

and then issue 13 will be the start of an 8house story by Fil Barlow.

and at SDCC  From under mountains was just  announced. It’s an  8house series by Marian Churchland Sloane Leong and Claire Gibson

Set in the isolated country of Akhara, rival houses face off in the struggle for political power and military security. Three unlikely figures — a lord’s daughter, a disgraced knight, and a runaway thief — will change the fate of their world, but the only hope of peace may lie with the mystery shrouded goblins and witches, and the ancient powers they command”

octopuspiecomic:

Guys — something neat and exciting! I’m forming plans to do Octopus Pie in FULL COLOR in the near future! The comic has been in black & white for 7 years, and I think it’s time to try something new that will really enrich the comic.
To be sure, I’ll need your help for this. I would be employing a colorist, so I’ve made this a priority as the next goal of my Patreon Campaign. If we hit $2400 in pledges a month, it’ll be enough to keep me eating and happy, AND working with a great colorist to produce 10 full color pages.
If you love the comic but haven’t pledged, this is a great opportunity to do something that directly affects the art. It doesn’t need to be much - even a buck or two per month will help towards the goal! Pledges over $2 will also give you access to the sketches and vintage OP art I post to Patreon.
If the promise of color hasn’t sweetened the deal enough, colorist Sloane Leong has done three sample pages of recent strips! You can look at them here. Also be sure to check out Sloane’s excellent cartooning and illustration work. YEAH!

yo! so i’ll be coloring Meredith’s rad comic really soonl! click the links above to check out the colored pages and pledge if you like it! yea!

Color Design In Comics
Thursday July 24, 2014 5:00pm - 6:00pm

Room 32AB

Some of the most memorable color decisions in comics can happen before the first page is drawn. Ian Herring (Ms. Marvel), Ryan Hill (Judge Dredd: Mega-City Two), Sloane Leong (Change), and José Villarrubia (Trillium) discuss the art of color design with moderator Douglas Wolk (Reading Comics).

Image Comics: I…is for Innovation
Sunday July 27, 2014 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Room 7AB
Drawing creator-owned comics can be tough, but our panelists make it look easy. Join Amy Reeder (Rocket Girl), Chris Burnham (Nameless), Tula Lotay (Supreme: Blue Rose) and a few very special guests as they discuss work ethics, storytelling, finding collaborators, and creating some of the best comics in the business.
